Pneumonia—Third Quarter 2007 Results

Time to Treat: Receiving antibiotics as quickly as possible has been shown to yield better results. A high score is better than a low score.

Oxygenation assessment: Knowing how much oxygen is in the blood is important when treating patients with pneumonia. A high score is better than a low score.

Use of pneumoccocal vaccine: Immunization for pneumoccocal pneumonia (pneumonia caused by one type of bacteria) is recommended for certain groups of patients, including those hospitalized with pneumonia. Many patients can be safely immunized while they are at the hospital. A high score is better than a low score.

Use of blood cultures before first dose of antibiotics: When indicated, blood cultures should be drawn in the ER prior to the first dose of antibiotics. Blood cultures may not be indicated in some pneumonia patients. A high score is better than a low score.

Smoking cessation advice for pneumonia patients: Giving advice about stopping smoking is important for pneumonia patients who are smokers, or who have smoked within the past year.
